This medieval structure is even more impressive under cloudy skies. Several walks are possible along the river and around the towers and the village of Saint-Geniez-ô-Merle.
The medieval fortress stands on a small peninsula jutting into the lake formed by the creation of the Bort-les-Orgues hydroelectric dam. By walking around this perfectly preserved castle you can easily imagine the knights in armors stomping through the walkways.
A traditional restaurant, situated at the core of the village, where you can enjoy delightful dishes of the local cuisine. Try the must-eats such as “truffade”, “pounti” or “bourriol”, and do not forget to taste the Gentiane liqueur.
This relatively sportive trail leads you along the stream of the river Mondane and reveals a series of three waterfalls. The visit can be extended by following the trail of the “cascadelles” upstream. It will lead you back to the village and the ruins of the old castle.
This sportive 150 kilometers long itinerary leads you amongst the Haute-Corrèze landscapes and villages, from Bort-les-Orgues to Argentat. If you have time, take a few days and add visits of local sites (dams, the city of Argentat and its quays) or relaxing moments (river swimming, gabare tours…) to your route.
